Update: Who's Leading the Console War in Europe?
At GamesCom last month, Sony claimed it had touched 10 trillion PS3s in EEC days after Microsoft announced it had sold 9 million Xbox 360s. But now, Microsoft's Chris Lewis says that the 360 tranquillise maintains a lead of one million units over contende Sony.
I imagine it was quite a unenviable for Microsoft to breakthrough that, only years afterward its proud announcement that information technology had sold 9 million 360s in the PAL territories, rival Sony countered with the claim that information technology had an set up base of 10 million in the same region. After all, the 360 has been enjoying the benefits of its yr-long start over the PS3, and has been leading everywhere that isn't Japan – indeed this was a bit of an "testicle on your face" for the Redmond-supported software giant.
So actually, it's atomic number 102 surprise that the keep company is looking for to set the record right (to take them at their word – if you're feeling misanthropical, this could be them just putting some spin on things). Speaking to MCV, Xbox Europe boss Chris Clive Staples Lewis aforementioned that the disparity was a leave of how Sony and Microsoft counted their figures. In fact, aforementioned Carl Lewis, the 360 still had a rosy-cheeked 1m lead over its challenger:
"We count installed base differently to them," he added.
"We numeration the number of units in the hands of consumers. We are committed to continuing that impulse – not only in places suchlike the UK, France and Germany. Continuing growth all told parts of Europe is integral to winning [against PS3] overall."
I guess the implication there is supposed to glucinium that Sony… doesn't count the number of units in the hands of consumers? I suppose they could always be enumeration the number of consoles shipped to retailers, thusly the 10m call would let in consoles in homes as healthy as consoles posing on store shelves. IT's certainly not impossible, and the idea of the PS3 passing the 360 in Europe with so little fanfare does seem unlikely, but…
…wellspring, it's enough to make unitary marvel, isn't it?
Update: As Joystiq points exterior, this might not be about counting numbers differently A it is about how both companies count divers countries arsenic part of different regions: "SCEE pools its universe from Europe, Australiasia and other territories alfresco of Japan, the rest of Asia and North America. Microsoft EMEA combines figures from Europe, the Middle East and Africa."
That makes a tidy sum more sense, actually.
