A true antique (Latin: antiquus; 'erstwhile', 'ancient') is an item perceived as having value because of its artful or historical significance, and often defined as at to the lowest degree 100 years one-time (or some other limit), although the term is frequently used loosely to depict any object that is erstwhile.^[one] An antique is usually an item that is collected or desirable because of its age, dazzler, rarity, condition, utility, personal emotional connection, and/or other unique features. In 1979, the British art critic Edward Lucie-Smith wrote that "Antiquarian-dealers ... sometimes insist that nothing is antiquarian which was made after 1830, although the barrier has been broken down in recent years past the enthusiasm of collectors for Art Nouveau and Art Deco.^[4]

The culling term, antiquities, commonly refers to the remains of ancient art and everyday items from antiquity, which themselves are oftentimes archaeological artifacts. An antiquarian is a person who collects and studies antiquities or things of the past.

Antiquing is the act of shopping, identifying, negotiating, or bargaining for antiques. People buy items for personal use, gifts, or turn a profit. Sources for antiquing include garage sales and chiliad sales, estate sales, resort towns, antique districts, collectives, and international auction houses.

Note that antiquing also ways the craft of making an object announced antique through distressing or using the antique-looking pigment applications. Often, individuals get confused between these handmade distressed vintage or modern items and true antiques. Would-exist antique collectors who are unaware of the differences may find themselves paying a high amount of money for something that would have little value if re-sold.

Antique furniture is a popular expanse of antiques because furniture has obvious practical uses also as collector value. Many collectors use antique piece of furniture pieces in their homes, and treat them with the promise that the value of these items will remain same or appreciate. This is in dissimilarity to buying new furniture, which typically depreciates from the moment of purchase.

Antique furniture includes dining tables, chairs, bureaus, chests etc. The most common wood are mahogany, oak, pine, walnut, and rosewood. Chinese antique article of furniture is oftentimes made with elm, a woods common to many regions in Asia. Each wood has a distinctive grain and colour. Many modern pieces of article of furniture use laminate or wood veneer to accomplish the same effect. There are a number of unlike styles of antique piece of furniture depending on when and where it was fabricated. Some examples of stylistic periods are: Arts & Crafts, Georgian, Regency, and Victorian.
